1st International Conference on Green Computing-ICGREEN, 29-31 July, 2010, Greece

Call for Papers

ICGREEN is organized by IICREST – Interdisciplinary Institute for Collaboration and Research on Enterprise Systems and Technology

SCOPE

The 1st International Conference on Green Computing, ICGREEN 2010, focuses on the role of computing, or information technology, to accomplish more eco-responsible behavior of people. The conference aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners who are interested in both computing and the possible impact of computing on the environment, and who are committed to work on the development of eco-effective technologies and technology applications.

From ‘Silent Spring in the 60’s’ to the current United Nations Millenium Declaration, people and countries have been increasingly encouraged to achieve better management, conservation and sustainable development of all resources provided by nature. Although views may differ, most scientists would attribute a key role to technology in achieving this. Information technology, in particular, can provide monitoring facilities, control systems, intelligent construction models and so on. From a scientific point of view we especially welcome input considering the promise that Service-Oriented Architectures hold as an enabler of sophisticated mechanisms that would support a transition to or monitoring of environment-friendly solutions.

Areas & Topics

The 4 directions in which the topics of ICGREEN 2010 are positioned are:

ICT to create awareness for 'green behavior'
ICT to support 'green behavior'
ICT to allow for analyzing social or technical systems with respect to 'green properties'
ICT as a sector itself to become 'greener'

We invite researchers and practitioners to present their innovative ideas concerning (any of the) above directions, stressing on either 'Inside' solutions (concerning the purpose of making the ICT sector greener) or 'Outside' solutions (concerning the support of ICT to other sectors in their efforts to become green), and at the same time addressing either Effectiveness (no waste being produced) or Efficiency (pushing for less consumption), or ideally both.

The topics of ICGREEN 2010 are:

› green design
› energy-efficent computing
› power management
› green data centers
› disposal and recycling
› regulatory compliance
› eco-labeling of IT products
› environment-related risk mitigation
› green metrics
› virtualization
› augmented reality
› strategies for deployment and operation
› policies for managing of virtual resources
› green IT lessons (experience, case studies)
› teleworking
› green printing
› (remote) collaboration
› measuring environment-related impact

Venue

Greece, located in the southeastern Europe, is a very beautiful country that offers top quality tourist attractions to the visitor. Consisting of the main land and several islands, it offers beautiful beaches, lovely mountain landscapes, many picturesque villages, and a wealth of archaeological sites and treasures.
Piraeus, Greece's third largest urban centre and now part of the Athens metropolitan area, is located a few minutes away from the center of Athens - Greece's capital named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom, is a very attractive and busy city.
Piraeus has the biggest harbour in all Greece and one of the most important in the mediterranean. At the top of that harbour, many little picturesque and lively bays may be found having many excellent cafeterias and traditional Greek restaurants and taverns.
Piraeus is an ideal place to start off excursions both for island cruising and mainland sightseeing. There are many boats that start off their journey to the numerous beautiful Greek islands from the harbour of Piraeus which is the main connection point to all of the Greek islands.
The conference will be held at the University of Piraeus, which was founded in 1938 under the title of the “School for Industrial Studies” and located in a modern building in the centre of Piraeus (one of the 8 universities in the region of Athens), in collaboration with the department of informatics. The department began operating in 1992 and focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects and advancements of computer science.
